Diabetes Eye Care
Protecting Your Vision with Diabetes
Specialized Clinical Monitoring for Long-Term Eye Health. If you have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, your eye health requires specialized, ongoing attention. Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable sight loss in the UK, primarily through a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy.
At Millican Opticians, we provide comprehensive diabetic eye assessments that go far beyond a standard sight test. Our goal is to detect the earliest signs of changes to your retina, often long before you notice any symptoms in your vision.
What We Look For
High blood sugar levels can damage the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye. During your assessment, we are looking for:
-
Micro-aneurysms: Tiny bulges in the blood vessels that may leak fluid.
-
Retinal Hemorrhages: Small spots of blood on the retina.
-
Macular Edema: Swelling in the central part of your vision which can cause blurring.
Why Technology Matters: We use 3D OCT Scanning to see beneath the surface of the retina. This allows us to detect swelling and fluid leakage that traditional cameras might miss, ensuring you receive the right care as early as possible.
What to Expect During Your Visit
A diabetic eye assessment is painless, non-invasive, and incredibly thorough. We create a permanent digital record of your eye health, allowing us to compare images year-on-year to spot even the most microscopic changes.
-
Vision Assessment: Checking your visual acuity and prescription.
-
Advanced Imaging: Capturing high-definition 3D scans and photographs.
-
Detailed Inspection: Using high-powered magnification to inspect the health of your retinal vessels.
-
Expert Results: Your optometrist will walk you through your results on-screen immediately.
