NHS Urgent Eye Care (CUES & MECS)
Avoid the A&E Wait
NHS-Funded Urgent Eyecare in Moreton and Prescot. If you experience a sudden change in your vision or a painful eye condition, you don’t need to wait for a GP appointment or spend hours in a hospital waiting room.
As an accredited Primary Care Hub, Millican Opticians provides the Community Urgent Eyecare Service (CUES). This is a free NHS service for patients registered with a GP in the Wirral (Moreton), Knowsley, or St Helens (Prescot) areas.
What We Can Treat
Our accredited optometrists are trained to assess and manage a wide range of urgent conditions, including:
-
Red or Painful Eyes: Including infections and “pink eye.”
-
Sudden Vision Changes: Blurred or distorted sight.
-
Flashes and Floaters: New or sudden onset.
-
Foreign Bodies: Something stuck in the eye that won’t come out.
-
Severe Eye Allergies: Intense itching, swelling, or watering.
Please Note:
If you are experiencing a chemical burn or a penetrating eye injury, please proceed directly to the nearest A&E.
Expert Diagnosis & In-House Prescriptions
What sets Millican Opticians apart is our clinical leadership. With Independent Prescribing (IP) Optometrists on our team, we offer a hospital-grade level of care right in your community.
The Benefit to You: Most opticians can only diagnose a problem and refer you elsewhere for treatment. At Millican, we can diagnose, manage, and prescribe the necessary medication (such as specialized antibiotic or steroid drops) directly. It is a seamless “one-stop” clinical experience that saves you a trip to the pharmacy or the hospital.
How to Access Urgent Care
The CUES service is not a walk-in service. To ensure you are seen by the right specialist at the right time, we use a clinical triage process.
Call Us Immediately: Contact our Moreton or Prescot practice as soon as you notice symptoms.
Clinical Triage: Our coordination team will ask you a series of specific questions about your symptoms.
Assessment: Depending on your needs, you will be offered a telephone consultation, a video assessment, or a face-to-face appointment, often within 24 hours.
