Children’s Vision Care
Building a Foundation for Bright Futures
Expert Children’s Eyecare from 6 Months Old. Many parents believe they must wait until school age or until their child can read for a first eye examination. In reality, a child’s vision develops most rapidly in the first few years of life.
At Millican Opticians, we believe in proactive care. We recommend a full visual assessment starting from 6 months old to ensure your child’s eyes are developing correctly and to catch potential issues early, during the most critical stages.
Painless, Play-Based Testing
We Don’t Need Your Child to Read. Our pediatric examinations are designed to be an enjoyable, play-based experience. We use specialist diagnostic equipment tailored to young children who cannot yet speak or identify letters.
Our methods include:
-
Preferential Looking Tests: We assess vision by observing which patterns the baby naturally looks at.
-
Light-Reflex Tracking: We use precise light techniques to ensure the eyes are aligned and following movement properly.
-
Child-Friendly Eye-Charts: For older children, we utilize simplified symbols, numbers, or pictures to determine their prescription.
Catching Issues Early
Early detection is the key to preventing long-term visual impairment. We specialize in identifying and managing common pediatric conditions, including:
-
Lazy Eye (Amblyopia): Ensuring the eye with the weaker vision is treated effectively during the critical development period.
-
Squints (Strabismus): Correcting the misalignment of the eyes.
When to Book an Appointment: If you notice your child doing any of the following, please book an assessment—no child is too young to be seen.
-
Tilting their head or squinting.
-
Sitting too close to the TV.
-
Rubbing their eyes frequently.
-
Having one eye that sometimes wanders inwards or outwards.
Managing Short-Sightedness in Children
Short-sightedness (myopia) is increasing globally, but at Millican Opticians, we do more than just “correct” it—we manage it. We offer advanced 2026-standard treatments to slow the progression of myopia, reducing the risk of serious eye health issues later in life.
Our Myopia Control Options Include:
-
Specialist Spectacle Lenses: Featuring advanced MyoCare lens designs.
-
Dual-Focus Contact Lenses: Soft lenses specifically made for children to slow eye growth.
-
Low-Dose Atropine Drops: Where clinically appropriate.
Why Myopia Management Matters: Slowing progression is not just about a weaker prescription; it reduces the risk of retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma in adulthood.
Inclusive Care (Learning Disabilities & Autism)
We are committed to making comprehensive eyecare accessible for every child. Our Inclusive Care service is specifically designed for children with autism, ADHD, or learning disabilities.
What to expect:
-
